/out/ is generally a place for newbie outdoorsmen and indoor types curious about the outdoors to be confused together. I say that because from what I've seen, when someone who obviously knows his shit posts in a thread, the thread will generally die immediately.
That being said, some newbies know more or less than others, so you end up with some pretty decent discussion and diverse ideas going on here. The board being anonymous, it isn't plagued with the usual host of problems typical of online communities where certain members' opinions carry more weight than others.
I can't name one useful thing I've learned from reading /out/, but being able to discuss the outdoors in an anonymous format has been quite enjoyable.
