So fellow /out/doorsmen, I'm starting to become interested in historical outdoor gear, particularly from the french fur trade era. It's time for a new knife anyway since my old CRKT died (I swear I though it would go years ago, but for a $25 knife it has worked shockingly well), and I'd love to try and make a crooked knife. The First Nations / Native Americans and the European Hommes du Nord used these knives to carve tools as well as canoes and paddles. Since I'm spending a summer canoeing, it seemed appropriate.
I've got the tools I think I will need, but I've never worked with steel before; just brass, copper, and silver. Any tips for a first timer?
