Always have light sources handy, bug spray is a must (especially on feet/legs because ticks are the most concern). Don't be afraid of buying a bugnet to wear on your head, I did (I bought a whole bugnet jacket in fact) and holy shit when you're hunkering down for a rest or snack it can be an absolute goddamn lifesaver.
Consider lashing a can of bear spray to your pack. It's very unlikely you will need it but if you do it needs to be accessible at a moment's notice. Don't skimp on your food or comforts; make sure you can relax and eat well. If you aren't camping overnight a simple net (non-jungle) hammock is a good idea. If you are sleeping overnight just get a jungle hammock. Don't underestimate your water needs, or food. Don't get shot trespassing, don't be mistaken for an animal and get shot. Bring a camera, bring first aid and plenty of Advil. You'll need something that can double as a weapon but doesn't have to be explicitly a weapon; like a hatchet or hammer. Bowie knife if you like. Be prepared to get wet and again DON'T SKIMP, you need to be able to stay comfortable, warm, dry or the entire thing is ruined profoundly. Have a good time.
