I have a fair bit of experience in both, only sea kayaking though, did half a years schooling where I kayaked or cannoed almost every day.
For distance or ocean kayak, definitely, but even a small canoe BTFO's a kayak in carrying capacity, kayaks win in being easier to recover in if being tipped over, but I've always thought of it like this, why are you in so rough water that it could tip you over? Go the fuck to shore.
Greenland rolls are fun though
