Where I live, there's a site that uploads all these sweet places with no location, so you have to go by clues off photos and stuff.
As for what you bring with you, that really depends on where you're going. Definitely invest in a good multitool like a Leatherman Wave or something. Torches, batteries, warm jumper, decent shoes (Waterproof may be desired) and I always have a medical kit. You might want to take some gloves as well, if you don't have your tetanus shot.
