But you're right, they 100% take what they want for themselves before it goes on the floor for the rest of the world to see. Not necessarily for profit but just because whatever it is is desirable.
Also lucky for me I inherited a box full of my grandpa's old moving blankets which are all 80%< wool so I probably won't have to worry about tracking down wool ever again
