OP, start with a child’s cap gun. Shoot it in the other room while the dog is eating. Have someone observing the dog’s reaction. Then slowly increase the distance and loudness of the gun while using something your dog likes as a distraction. My dogs heard a 12g for the first time when a pigeon was released right next to them, they didn’t even notice the gun.
