Meyer learned from other masters works and practised fencing likely in a guild and as a member of the city militia. He did not plagiarize as he often mention other masters or states that that technique is old school. His main achievement is not only to master pretty much every discipline and cold steel weapon of his time, but that he actually wrote it down in full detail with beautiful wood prints explaining what's going on. His book was highly influential at the time despite Meyer dying very young from dysentery. And it is highly relevant today.
