The only thing I will say about taking dogs out is as someone who doesn't have one. If you are on a trail, keep control of your dog. Dogs think it is their job to run ahead of the pack (meaning you and your friends) in order to scout out trouble and protect you. I've seen dogs that the owners swore up and down were the sweetest, friendliest dogs get aggressive when they came across other hikers on the trail. It's not the dog being bad, it's the dog doing what's in its nature. If a dog goes around a corner and can't see you, call it back. It's better than your dog getting sprayed, or worse yet, biting somebody. That's a can of worms you don't want.
