I actually recommend paper maps, maybe GPS and a compass at the very least, because you're not in the world any more. No phone coverage and if you're going way the fuck out there you need to spend time planning, letting people know exactly where you're going and when you're next going to check in. Ain't much good if you fall arse over tit down a mountain, bitten by Mr Snek or have a vehicle break down and no one knows where you are exactly.
Basically pick a spot on the country, look at all the green bits that are national parks, state forests, crown reserve land that was used for droving, stock resting places and its all pretty much there- yes you can legally go fucking around all you want in state forests and the like without a permit. Just don't shoot the place up, leave rubbish anywhere and start a bushfire and really there's not much of an issue.
