They're not rare, but I felt lucky seeing nighthawks, given that they hang out in specific locations where I live only for about a month or so, and that they're only out at a specific hour. I also happen to like them and their relatives. It was impossible to get a decent picture though given how they hang out high in the air and are difficult to find when they aren't flying
