Got my Hugel started. Fortunately I did in fact end up having enough wood to fill up a modestly sized bed for my hill, much to my surprise. Not enough to actually stack the wood itself into a hill, but it creates a very nice bed bottom layer, on top of which I still have many sticks/branches, leaves, compost and dirt to stack on top in that order. It measures 3' x 9', a pretty good size I think. It's also facing diagonally, following the path of the sun to maximize sun exposure.
I don't think I'll be able to make it as steep as it's supposed to, though. Probably won't even end up being high enough to reach my waist, at about a meter. Would or will this be a problem? I can make it steep-ish, but I won't be able to make it very high. Any others doing Hugelkultur able to chime in on this with anecdotes and such?
