The real problem is that snakes are slower than people and are ambush predators. So unlike a cougar it won't run away before you see it. Also since it can't get away fast it will defend itself, so you end up walking on the ankle biter.
The good thing about snakes is you can easily kill it with only a stick so its good survival meat.
I blame the Bible for making everyone hate snakes, they're just poor legless ambush predators, most have no poison.
