Best bet with the poppers is early morning or late afternoon around sunset. When the water is fairly calm and you can see the bass jumping at the top. I think good technique matters a bit with them, not like a spinner you can just do a steady retrieve on.

There are certain instances when braid isn't the best choice. But I prefer it almost all of the time. If I'm bringing one rod with me, it will be braid.
