Honestly my vote is for a good liquid fuel stove. Alcohol stoves are tempting because they're cheap and lightweight but their heat output is still pretty weak. A good liquid stove is heavier and cost more upfront but the fuel cost is about the same, heat output is way better and it's an investment that can last the rest of your life. Aside from MSR and Coleman, check out Optimus. They make the Svea, which is a compact white gas stove that's been on the market for about a century now.
