I made my own potting soil
10 lb compressed coco coir (compressed coco fiber, assuming it's the same)
about 4 qt vermiculite
about 4 qt perlite
why both? because I don't know what I'm doing. Was this good/bad/doesn't matter?
Anyhow, made a big tub of it and put a lid on it so the cat wouldn't get in. I believe there's still airflow in though.
So what I'm asking, is what happened is when I opened it up after a couple days there was a covering over 70%? of it, some webby-looking mildew/mold stuff.
My thoughts, correct me on anything please:
perlite/vermiculite are interchangable and using a full bag of one is the same as half of each
I added too much water leading to the mildew/mold
Putting the cover on led to the growth
Putting the cover on with a little bit of oxygen through the holes near the handle led to the growth (ie, if it was vacuum sealed the growth wouldn't happen)
I don't know. I put the bin in the garage, which is below freezing, without a lid.
tldr
1. this stuff growing on my soil, would lack of oxygen kill it? ie if I vacuum sealed it
like my bin with lid is not airtight, so dark+moist+slight oxygen leads to mildew/mold?
2. is it mildew/mold what the fuck
3. should I even care about it, or is it the kind of thing that explodes after a week and then dies off or what?
I don't know, thanks for anything!
