That kind of stuff is frowned upon at the least and cutting standing timber without a permit is illegal in a lot of places. Take a tarp and practice rigging that. If you do build your own shelter be sure to leave some trash behind, so far as I can figure that's the bushcrafter code. At least every pos shelter I've seen "crafted" in a NF has had tons of trash.
