It was later explained to them that the old male rhino was infertile but was still in the habit of killing other males' offspring, making him a detriment to the species. By selling hunting rights the country not only got a fat chunk of cash towards their conservation effort, but they also eliminated a potential threat to the next generation.
But I guess having strong opinions on the internet is how we really save threatened species.
