The synthetic handle is stronger than a wooden one, but don't think it's unbreakable. Generally all synthetic materials are more brittle when cold and they loose their properties as they age.
A handle can break when the axe gets stuck and is pulled out with force. It's even worse for the handle if you try to split a knotty piece of wood by turning the axe upside down and dropping the heavy log on the blade. I doubt any axe breaks as long as it's used properly.
I recently got rid of a small hatchet. I only tested it once, and the edge was rolled right away. It was brand new so this may have something to do with the edge being not convex. I guess it gets thicker and stronger as you sharpen it.
