Savage rifles are known as being about the most accurate rifle you can buy for the price. A few years ago savage put together a professional shooting team using completely stock savage rifles that cost less than $1500 each. They won the national championship against custom built guns costing $20k+. Take from it what you will, but Savage makes an accurate rifle.
A friend of mine who is a state trooper has the same rifle, axis xp in .308, he says it's great. Another friend of mine (Iraq war vet) has a Remington 770 in .308, which is a competitor to the axis, and he says is garbage. I added the trooper and vet part to demonstrate they know their way around a gun, and I trust their opinions.
I personally have a Savage 10fp HS precision, and love it. I also have a 10fp in .223
