I live in the Seattle area and go /out/ a bunch. It really is a great place to live for outdoor stuff. Great skiing, hiking, mountaineering, sailing...you name it. I can speak for the hiking scene mostly. There has to be some of the best trails in the county here, we really are spoiled. The I-90 corridor is very busy during the summer and is basically not worth going to anymore.
If you're wondering about the Wenatchee forest, that will be on the eastern slopes of the Cascades. The forests have more larches and ponderosa pines, not as densely packed foliage as the western side. My favorite part is near the North Cascades. Really great fall colors. Look up the Enchantments too.
Be warned about western Washington, the people are weird as hell and will not give you the time of day. There is no sense of community. Traffic is atrocious and cost of living is oppressive. Things are better east of the mountains, though.
