The real trick is actually getting outside and doing it. Plant something. If you don't have much time, plant fruit bushes and briars. Blackberry and Raspberry plants grow fast and fruit well. Tree do even better, but take a little longer. Neither need much attention and are normally good for most people. If space is an issue try container gardening. There are hybrid corn strains developed for container gardening, though most do well anyway. If you have no porch or patio then make a nice hanger for outside a window and put some potted veggies out there. Got a place to hang strawberries or a Topsy Turvy tomato planter? Then put them up!
