One windstorm comes through in the winter, drops a 600 pound limb from 80 feet up onto your roof and you're fucked.
Ever been in an old-growth forest?
There's no grass.
The ground is covered in rotting leaves and branches. Nothing but fungi and insects feeding on the decay. No new growth because the canopy is blocking all the light. So no berries or fresh shoots for deer or turkey.
Naturally fire would clear it out on occasion. And when that happens you lose everything.

Everything quickly started to grow back the first year. Not just trees but wild black berry, maypop (a native passion fruit) half a dozen types of grasses countless types of wildflowers....
My gamecam averages 250 pics everyday (when I feel like changing batteries).
Deer, raccoons, turkeys, songbirds, bobcats, foxes, possums.
Old-growth forests have their place. But so do meadows.
