Some of it's that stock sleds of today can go where only the boosted mod sleds of 10 years ago could get to. A lot of it has to do with education, and people making choices to ride with those who have gear and knowledge.
There's friends of mine that sled who I won't ride with. Great people, but I don't trust them with my life innamountains.
