because people feel the need to justify spending large amounts of time, energy and money on all this stuff. when really it's just fun for them and if it wasnt almost all of them wouldnt give two shits.
then hollywood/media and the outdoor equiptment marketing industry steps in to help build the narrative and get people spending.
