The shape of the glass works like a brandy snifter, allowing evaporation to alter the flavor and concentrate the scent so you can nose the whiskey before drinking it and enjoy the flavor and aroma more. With cognac, the snifter makes a noticeable difference to me; with whiskey, the glencairn doesn't really make any difference in how it tastes/smells except for certain brands. I just like using the glencairn to look fancy, as opposed to my rocks glass with deer on it for when I'm feeling rustic. If I had a more sophisticated palate, I'm sure I'd get more mileage out of the glencairn.
