Went back to the same spot on the Gunnison today and caught my first ever Cutthroat. Although they are the only native trout in Colorado, they got wiped out by introduced rainbows and browns. Now any cutts caught in the area were privately stocked by landowners and make for a very rare catch outside of private land.
>>1226317Ugly Stiks really do suck though. They are pure fiberglass so they have jack shit for sensitivity and are bad for setting the hook. I use one for bait fishing carp and catfish, but I would never use one for lure fishing unless it was all I had. They are really fucking tough though.
>>1226262You want an ultralight rod rigged with 4 or 6lb line. Your rod will not break unless you put heavier line on there as ULs are built for 2-8lb line IIRC, maybe 2-6. If you want EZ mode, small circle hooks with worms or powerbait, you literally cannot not catch trout with a worm drifted down a river or sitting on the bottom of a lake. Use just a splitshot to get it near the bottom while still allowing it to drift if fishing in a river or a slip sinker rig if lake fishing. The big problem with bait is that you are going to kill a lot of trout with gut hooks it if you fish past your limit. Trout are insanely fragile (make sure to wet your hands before picking them up if you are releasing any, they are honestly that weak) and are easily killed by accident. My favorite lure for them if you are going that route would just be a white, black, or olive marabou jig. They are great for fishing in rivers as it is easy to fish any depth and can be hopped along the bottom, drifted, or fished like a minnow imitator. They are also great in lakes, but are kind of light and cannot be casted far. I like to rig up a dropper rig with a medium-small kastmaster in front for casting distance with a white marabou trailing about a foot behind. Tangles a lot before you get used to it, but I think it improves catch rate a good bit over just a kastmaster or just a jig. (part 1)
