>>1234133>>1234152I save well over $1000/year on potatoes by growing my own. That's simply because I'm also growing specialty potatoes like Purple Majesty. Locally, those are $10 per pound. Yellow potatoes are only $0.79/lbs, but Yukon Gold and Purple Majesty are no longer sold at all now. Russets are like $0.54/lbs and reds are around $1/lbs. There's a couple fingerling types but I don't know what those cost. I grow 4-5 types and only 2 are sold locally right now. This year I plan on growing a few 100 pounds more than normal. I'll be buying new cultivars between now and planting time so that I can round out my list of potato cultivars. That will help ensure not everything is destroyed should there be a weather, pest, or disease related problem.
Evidently, the average American eats a little over 100lbs of potatoes a year while Europeans eat about twice that amount per year per person. In case you don't know it, growing 100-200 pounds of potatoes is extremely easy and doesn't take up much space at all. You basically, plant, hoe, mulch, and water occasionally. The tops start to die off and you dig them back up. The best part is that you can choose specifically what flavor profile you want, the cultivar you want, and you get to control your own personal food chain.
