i posted before about picking up some wood chips that had been dumped in the woods for use as substrate. i grabbed some just now, pic related.
mostly i took the surface ones that were dry and seemed in good condition. below that i definitely saw wet ones with mycelium strands on them.
should these still be suitable for use as substrate, will i have to do more than the standard boiling to make them reasonably sterile? what about the wet ones that are decomposing already below the surface of the pile?
