>>1507322Assuming it was out of season, it sucks that it would be illegal to keep it. I mean I i know why its good to have that law, but I hate letting a fish I know might die go when I could at least make sure its utilized. That being said a 3 lb fish is a decent fish in the north. My PB is probably around 4 or 5 and I fish a lot here.

>>1507392Stocked trout of any kind can be caught on anything that moves or looks puffy and brown. Wild browns and rainbows are smarter than your average stocker and follow more of a match the hatch type of approach. Brook trout, at least where I live are only in tiny tiny backwater streams where there is enough old growth to sustain them. Casting those is near impossible with a conventional fly rod. That being said a good cast with low profile tippet can bring most brookies in the net. I can't speak for big river ones out west. I'd say among the true trout species, wild or stocked makes a bigger difference than brown or rainbow. Brown are only more prevalent because they can tolerate warm water better. Since there is no old growth to shade the small streams, only browns can live in most waters where farming ever occurred since the 1880s.
