We did a kind of "dry run" at the start of january. Went innawoods for about 4-5 hours at -4 Fahrenheit and made a small bivouac, basically a tarp to shield us from the wind and a small fire for soup, steak and hot cocoa. It was pretty livable, but I think it boosted his confidence to dumb levels of bravado.
The thing that irks me is that he thinks the dangers associated with winter camping are no big deal. the guy is always well prepared in terms of equipment, but he can't seem to really be able to plan ahead. He wants to go out there and come back with the feeling of "yeah we did it". It's almost like he has something to prove.
And just to make things clear about the not being able to plan ahead thing, we're talking about a guy who, during our last camping trip, really wanted to take a shit in the river. He did it even though all our group told him he was an idiot. Imagine our faces when we found out he shat upstream from where we took our water.
tl;dr No real overnight winter camping experience.
