Went out to Mallows Bay on the Potomac last weekend. Water is still cold enough that the Crappie are coming in and biting well. Also caught a straggling Yellow Perch and a Bluegill. Only three largemouth but they were all over 18". Not very weighty but it's still early. Lost at least a two-foot snakehead when it slipped the hook right next to the boat.
...and what were they all biting on? Beetle Spins. White with Pink-Stripes fork-tail with a gold-bladed jig spinner. I usually spin 5" single-tail grubs with larger blades but nothing wanted to chase those yet (I'm sure it'll pick up as the water warms). Downsizing and spinning real slow just above the bottom made the bite pick up drastically. Rod was a new light Berkley Lightning with 6# mono on an Abu Garcia Cardinal.
Been cool the past couple nights. Hoping the crappie will still be around when I make it back out there this weekend. Hope to find a few more largemouth this time around too.
