>>923119Well anon, I'm a professional sound engineer who records /out/ as a hobby. As such I use fairly professional stuff and almost only record ambience in stereo (as opposed to shotgun mic or the like) although sometimes I use a shotgun or my parabolic mic dish.
For what you're asking I would suggest getting a handheld recorder that:
1) has built-in stereo mics
2) has an external mic in (doesn't have to be fancy XLR, just a 1/8" jack is fine).
That way you can record in stereo but also do point-and-shoot with the shotgun mic as you wander around. Assuming you're on a typical "starting-out" budget, I'd recommend something like the Tascam DR-05 (or similar) and something like the Audio-Technica ATR6550 shotgun mic.
