While Everest is definitely too commercialised it isn't necessarily overcrowded. It's over-commercialised in that large corporate all-inclusive commercial expeditions have become the golden standard whereas small lightweight shoe-string budget expeditons that resemble the pioneering spirit have been elbowed out (mainly by the Chinese and Nepalese governments). Futhermore, commercial expeditions virtually only climb two routes, the majority of which only ever climb the southeast ridge. On top of that the climbing season on Everest is short because of monsoon rains and climbers make use of brief weather windows to make their summit bid, which means everyone is climbing the same route at the same time. Thus queues emerge.
