Toe shoes make your foot posture more similar to being barefoot, correcting deficiencies in running form caused by the muscle atrophy that results from wearing heavily padded shoes all the time. I'm not sure I'd recommend vibrams for hiking though, but I can't go back to wearing padded soles any longer. Ideally, I'd go for Vivobarefoot tracker FGs.
