the Sony PCM-D100 is still in production. At $775 new it's fairly expensive and used they're not much discounted. The PCM-D100 enables a complete amateur like myself to make good recordings without having a clue. It's also pretty rugged; mine's been rained on, pecked at by vultures, pissed on by coyotes, buried in snow and knocked down a ravine. Two years ago I started recording coyotes at their den staking the tripod to the ground and leaving a pile of raw chicken nearby.
