When Turkey went full export ban in the early 1970s, a lot of the big European brands turned to African Meerschaum to fill the void and it was everywhere for a while. I don't think there is currently a supplier of African block meerschaum in any quantity right now, so any African meer pipe you do get will have to be estate.
One thing to be very careful of with meer pipes: pic related. It is the maker's mark for Pioneer, a big maker of African Meer pipes for lots of brands, and its maker's mark is (probably intentionally) VERY similar to Peterson's. Unless the pipe SPECIFICALLY marked with the Peterson name or something else that ties it to Peterson (like verified Dublin hallmarks on the silver band), assume the pipe is a Pioneer.
Pioneer pipes aren't bad, just not worth as much as a Peterson.
