I keep an off-site in a safe deposit box at the bank. Rotate that one out a few times a year.
The three drives in a pelican case in my gun safe are my primary backups for my machines.
Photos are stored on my photo host (who uses Amazon S3), in addition to the safe-deposit drive, primary backup drive, and main laptop.
I keep other content on Amazon S3. For simple storage, that along with Glacier are retardedly cheap. I'm warehousing a few gigs of important data there for pennies a month.
Burying something as delicate as a hard drive just sounds like trouble. If you're set on that, I'd throw in a couple silica gel cartridges to keep things in the container dry.
I'd also think multiple flash drives would be more reliable long-term than a single mechanical spinning disk... also not putting all your eggs in one basket that way.
