This reminds me. Scandinavian trolls become petrified when exposed to light, right? Well, my theory is that comes from when travelers at night would suspect there is something behind them, turn around and see what they think is a troll in the darkness, then light or turn their torch only to see a rock or tree that vaguely looks like a troll.
