They can reproduce, but there's nothing abstract about that. It's survival in the wilderness, but with a bunch of people. I think you're 10 or 20 in the beginning. They also age.
I once lost everyone because nobody made babies and everyone got old. Turns out they only reproduce if they live with someone.
