I've only hiked a small part of the Arizona trail (roughly points 19 to 20 on map) and they really missed a great opportunity to move the route slightly more east through the eastern Mogollon rim and the Mogollon plateau, which is almost all 7,000ft-8,000ft ASL and pine trees and alpine lakes.
