I'm building an aquaponics system with one plant. I have a 5 gallon water cooler jug. I want maybe like 2-3 fish along with a small shrimp or snail to eat the solid waste.
I went to the pet store and its hard to explain what I want to do without sounding insane.
They kept referring me to small fish because they don't produce a lot of waste requiring a filter. I asked what the purpose of the filter was, they said to take out the nitrates/nitrites from the bacteria converting the ammonia.
So I need to know, how many fish and what type of fish can I do, without a filter, knowing that the plant itself consumes the nitrites and shrimp/snail will eat the solid shit and algae? I was under the impression that this system can operate without a filter so long as the bacteria has a place to grow.
PS this is ornamental. I ok with 5 small fish. I don't want fish that will grow to more than 2".
