These often have the same issues as PVC in that they don't breathe. Shit like pit zips or a poncho can help offset this and allow them to breathe, but you will probably only use them when you need them, in which case, may as well use a trash bag (or other ultra liteweight) if it is less likely to rain and you need to save ounces.
I could see a poncho serving well as a tarp or something to lay on, but cumbersome if it isn't made right, you don't know what you're doing, or are afraid to look like a jedi.
