There's a certain way to carve a spoon. Don't do it free form. Draw your spoon on the split piece of wood first. Make the handle longer, make it sleeker. Remove more material so it's not too bulky. Also, the lip should be quite thin too, but make sure not to go too thin.
I can't really say more than that. But look at how terrible my first attempt was. I used a really old and dry bit of Birch and it was hell to carve. I eventually ruined it by mistake. This was only November/December of last year.
The reason it's so bulky at the top is because the wood was so hard and I wasn't used to using an axe that I couldn't remove material from that area without cutting and thinning the handle. It's abysmal, I know.
