>>1235069>>1235077>>1235092>>1235124Damn fine info! Much obliged, I can start looking into things further now. Knew about the moose and the mountain air being thinner far up North, but stuff like white socks is new to me.
Climbed a numer of 16-20k mountains so far, but I wouldn't try to solo climb anything more than a peak rated more than F-PD - the really easy stuff. Had my share of freak weather changes, so luckily that's not really new.
>>1235085>>1235089Took all pics myself. I just work a couple months, then travel a few weeks. Let's say that over the course of a year I'll be abroad for 3 months. I work with day/week contracts so can always find some sort of work and share a house so living quite cheaply. Requires some planning and discipline, but I've made it work.
As for English literacy in the Russian far East: quite low overall, but younger people in cities often know at least basic English. Other than that it's really hit or miss. You may come across oddball German or French speakers too. Keep in mind that Russians are stone-faced, but if you demonstrate you've made the effort to learn their language and get to know them a little they're an affable bunch. You'll still come across your share of unhelpful and impolite individuals, but it's Russia after all, don't take it personally.
Pic is view from Sabertse Pass, on the slopes of Mt Kazbek, Georgia.
