>>2481438OP where are you from? I live in Canada and have recently started back country camping. I would suggest buying the absolute minimal equipment for as cheap as possible and going on a one night solo trip without electronics. Bring your phone but leave it off. You'll be uncomfortable and bored and probably scared. You'll struggle to find a good spot, to make a fire, to cook your canned food or whatever.. You'll over or under pack. You'll sleep like shit or not at all.. but next time you will know what mistakes not to make. Also start exercising. At the very least start walking 2+km a day. And for fuck's sake report back after you've done it don't just leave this thread empty and dead with a few people waiting for a trip report.
My first time in the back country last summer we drove way, way too far on an empty highway far away from any town. We didn't scout any potential spots and just picked a random logging road we turned onto. It was muddy and shitty and there were dry pine needles everywhere so we were forced to sleep on the muddy road (dry thankfully) and make a small fire on it. After that I did 6-8 more trips throughout the summer which were mostly shit locations but got better and better every time. My last trip of the season was in late September and by then I had a shitty canoe, a lake I found which had a small empty island on it.. I didn't over or under pack. I knew where and when to gather firewood and how much I would need for the night. I knew how to cast a fishing line, how and kinda where to set a minnow trap, I knew to look out for widow makers (dead trees that might fall any day), how to use the public land atlas to spot private/public land so some boomer didn't come yell at us at 9pm after we had set up our tents, I knew how and where to set up a hammock.. it was heaven in comparison to the first muddy road spot.
I'm a noob but if you have any questions I'll give you honest answers.
