tl;dr there are gonna be situations where you will need to protect yourself from an aggressive dog (pepper spray, kicking it, shooting it, blah blah blah) but like everything in life 90% of the time in the united states of America these situations will be resolved with a small conversation and just waiting for the situation to develop and make a decision once you have all the facts.
