Personally I'd go to cabelas or whatever and go play with them.
Like I said, I gave the 78 an honest shot, but goddamn I felt like throwing that fucker out the window several times (and I only used it half a dozen times since I got it).
The 78 doesn't have a useable "turn preview". It squawks and puts an arrow on the map, but it's nothing like the 60/76 that's blatantly obvious which way to turn.
The 78 shuts off when external power is removed. 60/76 have a switch for that in the menu (turn off or stay on).
I just sucked data out of the 78. 4 waypoints were each in 4 files. Tracks were spread out between "Archive" and "Current" folders, buried in the internal memory. Pain in the ass, now I've got 6 files to merge into one.
With the 76 I just suck all the data out of it and it goes into a single GPX (or KML) file.
I liked my 60CSx. Had it for about 4 years. Split it open 2yrs after I got it, managed to repair it, and it worked another 2 years. To be honest, I think some of the problems it developed were actually with the mapset and not the hardware - the 76 with the same mapset did the same thing in the same location.
Keep an eye on ebay or craigslist, you can find good deals there.
Got my GPS12 6 years or so ago for $40, sold that for $80 on ebay last year.
Bought my 60 from Sportsmans Warehouse, but I needed a GPS that week. Sold that 4 years later for $150-ish.
Bought the 78 on ... amazon, probably.
Bought my first 76Cx on ebay for $150.
Bought the 76CSx on Amazon used for $120.
The 60 and 76 share the same firmware.
The 62 and 78 share the same firmware.
I'll be putting the 78 along with a RAM-mount on ebay in the next week or two.
