If you wish, you can use Japanese cut paste on the tree wounds. Thee are online guides for doing this and there may even be DIY mixtures you can make so you don't need to buy it. I think there's a recipe using Plasticine, but I don't know if the recipe used for Plasticine has changed over the years or not. Some people use regular modeling clay, school glue (white edible kind), and mud.
The biggest concern is how the wound is shaped. If that part is incorrect, it will not heal over quickly and become a point of rot even with cutpaste.
