I'm out of this thread as it's getting late, but here's a picture of that bit between Nottingham and Manchester. This is the Peak District, a national park. It's saved the sanity of many in the North and Midlands for generations. Beautiful, smaller than Wales, and less hardcore. So if you change your mind, have a look at this area. It might be too busy for you in midsummer though.
